Trappin' Aint Dead

Sox in Da Air...They Comin' to Delaware!

**Disclaimer** Trap Karaoke recently announced their fall tour line up and Wilmington, DE has made the motha-luvin cut!! Reasons why I'm excited:

  •  I live in Wilmington, Delaware (Yes black people live in Delaware!)
  •  Don't have to travel to Philly (not that it's crazy far but still)
  •  Events (like this one) that travel to major cities never stop here
  •  Most importantly NONE of my friends has an excuse on why they can't come
So in honor of this news my subtitle is from a song from a local artist here. This track was so big that Meek Mill (with the braids) jumped on the remix.

Anyway.... I recently went to their summer tour stop in Philly at the TLA.

History

Just want to give yall a brief little background on this AMAZING black curated event. The event founder and director is Jason Mowatt. The first event took place on September 29, 2015 in New York City. The event turned out to be such a success that they decided to do a D.C. edition that December and then the rest was history.

They use to give out trophies to those who kilt the stage but I don't think they do that anymore. Now if you have the stage and crowd rockin then you will have an opportunity to perform another song of that artist.

Trap Karaoke even made TMZ headlines back in February of 2016 when Lebron James threw a karaoke party. They have been apart of many festivals including Broccoli City and Something In the Water. They have also been apart of weekend experiences like BET Awards and All-Star WeekendMouse Jones is now one of the main host for this event but the original host is Low Key. I am hoping that they both come to Delaware or maybe give a local host or DJ a shot.

Main Event

I have been 3 times to Trap Karaoke since they put Philly on the lineup. It would have been 4 times if one of the performing acts at Something In the Water festival didn't run late (insert eye roll). The first time I went was back in June of 2017 and it has been a ritual for me and my college friend to go ever since.

This time trap karaoke was on Friday. So literally right after work I had enough time to freshen up, change my clothes, and make my pre-game bottle. My two friends picked me up and then we headed out to Philly. Since we were a little early we went to His & Her Lounge to grab a drink since they had happy hour until 9pm (the peach long island was jumpin). Once inside we decide to head near the stage to claim our spots. We wanted to have a good view of all of the performers and be in the mixed. Some of our other friends meet us there so in total it was 6 of us.

As I mentioned before their host is Mouse Jones, however he was not in attendance. I was looking forward to seeing him since I am a faithful listener to the Guys Next Door podcast. However, they did have two other host who were good.

This event is big on shirts with slogans or as they call it " tees4thetrap."** Sn: I have a highlighted story on my IG labeled "Talk Heavy" if you need shirt inspo.

The bar had signature drinks that were inspired by some of the most popular songs/artist. Before the turn up begins and the performances start a set of rules are given to the crowd. Yes, they have rules! I love this part because they put RESPECT on the Black Queens name so that way we feel like we are in a safe place.

In order to be one of the performers for the night you must sign up ahead of time, but they do have open spots were they select people from the crowd to have their "moment to shine." On the projection screen you can see the order in which the performers go on stage. Make sure you pay attention to that if you signed up because they give you a limited amount of time to get to the stage before they skip your ass!

That night it felt like it was a lot of city girl performances. One group of ladies was in their 40's and went in! I didn't record her because she was like don't record me I don't want my husband to see (paraphrasing of course). They also show memes now while people are performing on the stage. Some people killed their performance like my friend. Like I mentioned above if you have the crowd rocking and you KNOW the lyrics, sometimes the dj will play another popular track by that artist; which is what exactly happened with him.

A sea of Melanin

They do have like an intermission section. That's when the R&B jams get played and the crowd goes ham singing but it doesn't stop there! During the intermission they give us a little twerk/dance session but they also take us to CHURCH. We was a whole choir when Kirk Franklin- Melodies From Heaven came on. If you've been to any black event you know swag surf is mandatory, with that being said please know your LEFT from RIGHT hahaha.

Overall, this is a vibe that you don't want to miss. Pleaseeee believe the hype that you receive from your friends and that you see/read online. This event is really a vibe. Trap Karaoke was the event that made me want to look for more black curated events to attend. I enjoy going to these functions were we can have a good time and truly enjoy ourselves and our culture without the drama. They are also one of the reasons I decided to blog.

If you want to create and cherish moments you wont forget than BUY A TICKET! Looking for a sense of community than BUY A TICKET!! If you want to turn up but in a SAFE SPACE than BUY A DAMN TICKET!!!

If you do not see your city on the list please go to their website and subscribe. During the subscription they will ask for your city. That is your opportunity to put on for your city (in my Jeezy voice)!! So tell your momma, her friends, your friends, your work folks, and they friends to sign up! I would have bet that DelState would end up on the list before Wilmington, Delaware. #noshade
