Where Brooklyn At?
Nostalgic Vibes & Bottomless Mimosas
Who loves 90s RnB?! Who loves a good ass brunch?!Well if you answered yes to both questions then you DEFINITELY want to keep reading!!
So let me just put this out there that I got a taste of what brunch is for the first time in DC for my 24th birthday and I've been in love with the concept ever since! Now, if you don't know, DC is well-know for their Brunch life. (PSA: I enjoy brunches with good ass food, music, and BOTTOMLESS mimosas) With that being said, there's this brunch spot in Brooklyn called Woodland that me and some friends have been eyeing for a couple of years. Watching their stories on IG would be torture for us because it was sooo lit!!! Sadly our schedules just never seemed to get us there...well at least not until now! *insert evil grin & Birdman hand rub*
Since the start of this blog I have been keeping an eye out on events that I feel are worthy enough (definitely have numerous events on my list) to blog about and share with the rest of the world aka THE MF'KIN PPL! One day I came across this company called Zumble. They're the creators of trivia games for the culture to bring a new meaning to game night while creating new experiences!
Their collection includes trivia questions to our most beloved TV shows and movies like Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Friday, and Coming to America to name a few. I have played two of their games Martin and Trap Trivia (personally prefer trap trivia).
Anyway, one day I seen this event that they posted called 90s RnB Karaoke and immediately I had to know more! I found the IG page associated with the event and then it was history. I read through the comments, looked at all the post and the tags. By the time I was halfway through I was sold on going to their next event and lucky enough for me they were putting together a 4 city tour (Brooklyn, ATL, DC, Houston). I posted the event on my Instagram story and sent it to a plethora of friends to see if anyone wanted to go and eventually thought of the brilliant idea to make a day trip out of the event since it started at night. In the end, only one of my close friends took the bait and decided to go with me.
In the end we went to the Brooklyn tour stop because I already had plans to go to Vegas on the day of the DC stop. In actuality going to the Brooklyn date worked out perfectly since it was around the time of my friends birthday. We were able to check out the brunch at Woodland like we've been wanting. Neither of us wanted to drive so we decided to take either the bus or train; whichever one was cheaper. We ended up taking the Amtrak because she had some connections (thank God!). Once we arrived in the city we decided to use the MTA because WE TRY OUR BEST TO SAFE MONEY! Lol. It didn't take us long to arrive to our first stop which was FOODDDDD *happy dance* aka Woodland. The restaurant was maybe a block or so up from the train stop.
Woodland NYC
Both of our food (mines are the first 3 plates going clockwise from drinks) |
We went on a Saturday, I would like to say we arrived there around 2ish. There was no line and since it was just her and I we were seated very quickly. Usually its really packed from the videos and normally a line but I think its because we went on a Saturday and at a late time. We ended up staying until about 4-5pm.
Seating is imperial style which means long tables with seating on both sides AND its tight to maximize space. Which means you might be at one long table with about 5 different parties depending on the size of your group. There are some areas that are just regular table seating in Woodland and I believe people were able to go downstairs to another seating area (I didn't venture downstairs to find out).
**Side note this seems to be a pretty popular layout style for restaurants in NYC. **
We decided to continue to take the train because we had some time to kill until the event. Y'all as soon as we left the restaurant and crossed the street onto the next block we were laughing and I was making a snap and then boom, literally bust my ass! Then after that we went up another block and had a photo shoot. Haha SMH! I mean why not?! It was NYC Fashion Week/end.
**Update** The restaurant actually posted that they were closing but there is a POSSIBLITY that they will be re-opening soon.
90's R&B Karaoke
After throwing back many drinks, one injury, and a train ride later we finally make it to Hotel RL. We didn't get there as early as we wanted to. We had hopes of grabbing at least one seat since our choice of footwear was heels. There was no issues or problems getting in. Once we walked into the space they had the photo back drop and the boomerang camera booth so it was only right that we partake in that! There was also some food vendors and a fully stocked bar. The line was long so we didn't get drinks. Once we walked around the place we posted up in the back until the event started. I did meet with 1/2 of the guys who started this event and was able to grab a photo with him. (Think the one I took the pic with is Jason G.)Side note: next time the fit will include sneaks as the footwear cause babbbbyyyy both our feets was on fire by the end of the night.
The guys did get on stage before the event started to address the crowd. They definitely were running on CP time but they did address that. The guys gave me Kid 'n Play vibes (no shade). The co-host/ event planner performed Usher and honeyyyy let me tell you the crowd went crazy when he started tickin' his body and ripping off his shirt. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE was getting into they performance from the fits to the actual dances and owning the stage. Brooklyn was definitely in the building heavy!
Anyways.....
There was one performance that I still remember that will help you to picture the atmosphere/vibes and why you need to check this event out! So the crowd is all in they R&B bag jammin n' shit. The next performer comes on stage and he brings a woman up with him. They perform and then at the end he lets us know he just meet shawty in the crowd and her vibes was so crazy that he brought her on stage to perform with him. I'm paraphrasing of course, but that was the gist of his spiel. I love my black people for creating memorable moments like this ❤.
Overall
Definitely make sure you go and check Woodland out (when they reopen) and make sure you bring some friends with you because I'm telling you it will be a memory you guys wouldn't forget! This was probably one of my favorite day trips to date that I can recall lol. The only sucky part about this trip was the fact that my friend and I missed the LAST train going back to Delaware. The next train was not until Sunday morning. We could've definitely stayed at the event until it was done but we sat in a fucking freezer (not literally but the AC was on blast!!) until the first train came. We both were tired, cold af, and feet hurting by the time we got back.
